The Nordic Africa Institute is seeking applications for the Guest Researchers’ Scholarship Program from scholars in Africa that are engaged in research on the African continent. Female researchers are especially encouraged to apply for these scholarships.

The Nordic Africa Institute is a center for research, documentation and information on modern Africa in the Nordic region. Based in Uppsala, Sweden, the Institute is dedicated to providing timely, critical and alternative research and analysis of Africa in the Nordic countries and to strengthen the co-operation between African and Nordic researchers.

Purpose of the Program

One of the main purposes behind this scholarship program is to establish and maintain relations with African research communities. The Nordic Africa Institute does this through the Guest Researchers’ Scholarship Program that provides opportunities to its participants in pursuing their own research projects, thereby indirectly strengthening the academic milieux in African countries, and promoting scholarly exchange with Nordic research communities.

Eligibility

Nordic Institute’s Guest Researchers’ Scholarship Program targets scholars in Africa that are engaged in research on/about the African continent and with a proven track record of extensive post-graduate research experience. The institute encourages women to apply for these scholarships.

Monetary provisions and facilities under the Guest Researchers’ scholarship include a return air-fare (economy class), accommodation, a subsistence allowance of SEK (Swedish kronor) 300 (approx. USD 45) a day plus an installation grant of SEK 2,500 (approx. USD 370), a shared office and free photocopying facilities up to a maximum of 1,000 copies. Guest Researchers have access to a computer/MS Word at the office and have to do their own typing.

The maximum duration of the stay is 90 days. To be entitled to a refund of the travel costs, the Guest Researcher has to stay for at least two months.

Additional activities

The Guest Researcher is expected to give a lecture in at least one other Nordic country. Train or air tickets (economy class) and accommodation will be provided for this trip.

Guest Researchers are sometimes invited to write a discussion paper for the Institute’s publications’ series or a short article for the Institute’s website. The draft of the discussion paper should be presented during the stay in Uppsala, preferably in a public forum.

Aga Khan International Scholarships for Meritorious Students

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June or July. The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master’s level courses but is also willing to consider applications for PhD programmes, when doctoral degrees are necessary for the career objectives of the student. Requests will also be considered for travel and study awards for PhD students doing their research in Third World countries on topics judged to be of interest to the Aga Khan Development Network.

These scholarships are available in countries like Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, Madagascar, France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada where the Foundation has branches.

The main criteria for selecting award winners are: l) excellent academic records, 2) genuine financial need, 3) admission to a reputable institution of higher learning and 4) thoughtful and coherent educational and career plans.

Preference is given to students under 30 years of age.

The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only. The cost of travel is not included in AKF scholarships. Applicants are requested to make every effort to obtain funding from other sources as well, so that the amount requested from the Foundation can be reduced to a minimum. Preference is given to those who have been able to secure some funding from alternative sources.

Half of the scholarship amount is considered as a loan, which must be reimbursed with an annual service charge of 5%.

Students may obtain application forms as of January 1st each year from AKF offices or Aga Khan Education Services / Boards in their countries of current residence.

Program participants

Each year, up to 110 Rotary Peace Fellows are selected, consisting of up to 60 master’s degree fellows and up to 50 professional development certificate fellows. Fellows earn either a master’s degree in international relations, public administration, sustainable development, peace studies, conflict resolution, or a related field, or a professional development certificate in peace and conflict resolution.

Program alumni are looked to as leaders who promote national and international cooperation, peace, and the successful resolution of conflict throughout their lives, in their careers, and through service activities.

Former fellows are currently working in grassroots and local nongovernmental organizations, national governments, the military, law enforcement, and bilateral and international organizations such as the United Nations, World Bank, International Organization for Migration, and Organization of American States. Graduates also enjoy the support of a growing worldwide network of fellow alumni committed to building peace.

Application timeline

Each district must set its own deadline for clubs to submit applications to the district selection committee. District-endorsed Rotary Peace Fellowship applications are due to The Rotary Foundation by 1 July. The timeline below is recommended for promoting the fellowships and selecting candidates.

December–January The Rotary Foundation sends application materials to districts. Districts begin distributing them to clubs.

January–February Districts and clubs promote the fellowship opportunity to attract well-qualified candidates.

March Clubs conduct interviews and make their selections, then submit their endorsed application(s) to the district (deadlines vary by district).

Welcome to the Graduate Program for Chromosome Dynamics

Genetic information, the blueprint for any living organism, is encoded by DNA. In higher eukaryotes, the DNA resides in the nucleus of a cell and is partitioned into linear units called chromosomes. The maintenance of genetic information and its faithful transmission from one generation to the next crucially depends on intact chromosomes. Failure to protect DNA from deterioration, impaired DNA repair or missegregation of chromosomes during cell division seriously compromises the fitness of any organism. Understanding the molecular basis of chromosome maintenance and dynamics is therefore essential for human health and fertility, industrial and food production, and plant breeding.

The Graduate Program in Chromosome Dynamics brings together some of Vienna's leading chromosome researchers to provide a stimulating and world-class training environment for those seeking to pursue a research career in this exciting field of modern biology.

Application

Eligibility

The program is open to students who hold a Masters degree in the biosciences, chemistry, medicine, or related fields, or expect to finish their Masters' study within three months of the application deadline.

Application Process

All applicants must apply via the online application system prior to the announced deadline. All candidates must present two confidential reference letters by internationally recognized researchers. Selection of candidates is exclusively based on scientific qualification.

Short-listed candidates will be invited for an interview with the participation of the faculty members concerned. Admission will be granted only if one of the faculty members is willing to offer his/her position to the candidate.

Selected candidates will be expected to accept the offered position in writing within 3 weeks and start within 6 months after the selection. Within the first 3 months of the thesis project, both student and supervisor can terminate the contract without further explanation (probationary period). Should a faculty member move to another institution, the student is free to move, or stay at the initial institution until the end of his/her thesis work.

Stipend

PhD positions are for a period of up to 4 years with a salary of € 26300 per year (funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and the two host institutions).

Criteria for Graduation

All students will be enrolled at the University of Vienna and must adhere to University regulations to obtain a degree. The official language of the program is English. Information for students on registering and regulations will be provided. In order to graduate, students have to fulfill these requirements. In short, they have to complete their practical work, write a thesis and complete the required courses, seminars and workshops outlined here. Students may only acquire credits (30 ECTS points) from courses recommended and listed by the program. Faculty members encourage publication of the thesis results in a peer reviewed journal and presentation of the results at an international conference before graduation.

The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships 2012

The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships target highly-qualified students from the countries listed below. About 120 scholarships will be awarded for studies in Sweden, starting in August 2012. The scholarship covers both living costs and tuition fees.

Please note that in order to apply for a Swedish Institute Study scholarship the student must first be admitted to a Swedish university/university college. The application period for study programs opens 1 December, 2011.

The application period for Swedish Institute Study scholarship will be March 14-25, 2012.

Countries
The program is open to candidates from two different categories of countries.

Category 1:
Candidates with citizenship from the following countries: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
Within this category around 60 scholarships will be awarded.

Category 2:
Candidates with citizenship from countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients, with the following exceptions: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Russia, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine.

Citizens from Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine can apply within the Visby Program.

Level
Scholarships are intended for studies in Sweden starting in the fall semester 2012 (August) and focus mainly on master’s level. A few scholarships will be awarded for studies at bachelor’s level.

Who is eligible?
The scholarships are intended for students from the above-mentioned target group for full time studies in Sweden. There is no age limit for scholarship holders.

Scholarships cannot be granted for students who:

Have already lived in Sweden for two years or more previous to the scholarship period.

Have a Swedish permanent residence or work permit.

Have previously been awarded a Swedish Institute scholarship for studies at Master’s level or for research at a Swedish university.

Already hold a Master’s degree from a Swedish university/university college.

Are currently enrolled in a study program on Bachelor’s or Master’s level at a Swedish university or university college.

How to apply for a scholarship
Prior to applying for a scholarship, the student must first apply for a study program at Master’s or Bachelor’s level via www.universityadmissions.se, an online application service for study programs in Sweden.

About 600 different study programs at Swedish universities are eligible for a scholarship. The programs have been selected by the Swedish universities and cover a wide variety of study areas. The list of eligible study programs can be found here.

The scholarship funds cover the 6-week program at the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, housing, travel, and living expenses, as well as additional cultural activities in New York with the opportunity to meet editors, publishers, and visit some of the most prestigious photography museums and galleries.

The four scholarships are open to applicants living and working in, and native to any of the following regions: Latin America, the Caucasus Region, Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union, East Asia, South Asia, Africa, or the Middle East.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Department of Photography & Imaging at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and the Magnum Foundation present programming in photography and human rights for the third summer, spearheaded again by Professor Fred Ritchin of the Department and Susan Meiselas of the Magnum Foundation.

The scholarship is aimed at intermediate and advanced international students, including experienced professionals. The six-week program is comprised of four courses and is designed to enable students to explore strategies for creating effective documentary projects in pursuit of human rights. Students will propose multimedia or traditional presentation strategies for their photo essays, which they will develop through two studio courses. A lecture course will provide participants with an opportunity to look at photography's strengths and weaknesses, both real and imagined, in attempting to determine new strategies for its use as both society and technology evolve. The final component is a discussion and writing course correlating with a public guest lecture series featuring speakers from the fields of photojournalism, law, and media. Scholarship fellows will remain in New York for an additional week to meet with local editors, publishers, and other experts in the field and explore museums, galleries, and other cultural resources.

The MSc in M&IS develops the "hybrid" mix of management and information systems skills that we know from experience is essential to the successful and strategic application of information and communication technologies by today's organisations. a. Research question

Under which conditions can the context of a human sensor be used in a (web) software environment to enhance the understanding and reliability of human sensor information and how does context play a role in scalable human sensor networks?

b. Tasks

The PhD student will design a method to express human sensor context in a formal language, which will be tested with use cases based on non-fictive human sensors in water and health. Formalised parameters and methods of geo-visual analytics shall be implemented in an open source software prototype following common design principles for software design. The PhD student will work closely together with the software developer to create and test the SEMA prototype software with the stakeholders in three iterations of ‘learn and deploy’.

d. Modalities and general requirements

The PhD position is for a total duration of 4 years with a Doctoral Degree awarded by the University of Twente. The PhD candidate will spend approximately two years in the Netherlands and two years in Tanzania. The PhD grant is approximately € 1500/month for the two years spent in the Netherlands and € 1000/month for the two years spent in Tanzania.

PhD candidates should be nationals of East Africa, preferably of Tanzania, and hold a Master of Science degree from a recognized university. A broad and multidisciplinary attitude is required. We strongly encourage female candidates to apply. PhD candidates are co-supervised by the research consortium and the PostDoctoral Scientist. PhD Candidates have a period of 6 months to fully develop their research proposal and qualify for the graduate programme. After the successful qualifier, the PhD candidates will attend advanced research skills courses at selected research schools in The Netherlands, depending on the PhD topic.

How can Tanzanian citizens behave in relation to the human sensor web (HSW) and become legitimate reporters of the quality of water and health services?

b. Tasks

The researcher will conduct literature review on common pool resources in online settings as well as focus groups of users of text-for-change initiatives in Eastern Africa. The researcher will ‘follow the problem’ by tracing the use of HSW and how people distribute their trust over time and scale. Data will be collected through survey first, then participant observation and documents, and analyzed through socio-political mapping of the resources and beliefs and behaviour of users. Comparative sub-case studies will be identified to refine the prescriptive part of the study.

MSc in Information Science or Sociology; affinity with Science and Technology Studies (STS)
Knowledge of Kiswahili; Field experience in East Africa is an advantage
Fluency in English and academic writing skills

a. Research question

Will water and health care officials/providers in Tanzania accept ‘human sensor web’ (HSW) or other open source information systems as part of their information and accountability structures?

The research design is based on triangulation and comparative strategies between surveys and in-depth case studies. Based on the survey outcomes, interesting cases will be selected for in-depth investigation through ethnographic work (observation, text analysis, and unstructured interviews). Especially accountability structures and individual discretion can be mapped through systematically asking who talks to whom about what. Theory-informed triangulation between surveys and case studies, and careful between-case comparisons will deliver the answers to the research questions.

Eligibility

Founders Scholarship - up to $68,000 over four years

Students with a 3.5 GPA are eligible for the Founders Scholarship. Students receiving this $17,000 per year award have graduated from high school with honors level classes and a rigorous college preparatory program. It is automatically awarded based on GPA at time of admission. It is renewable annually for four years of study.

Presidential Scholarship - up to $64,000 over four years

Students with a 3.3 GPA are eligible for the Presidential Scholarship. This $16,000 award is renewable annually for four years of study. It is automatically awarded based on GPA at time of admission.

Chargers Scholarship - up to $52,000 over four years

Students who have a minimum 3.0 GPA are eligible for the Chargers Scholarship. It is automatically awarded based on GPA at time of admission. This $13,000 per year award is renewable annually for four years.

Merit Based Awards- Separate Application Required

Colby-Sawyer offers merit based scholarships to incoming students based on their high school academic record, leadership qualities and community service involvement. These awards are not based on need and are renewable each year as long as the student remains in good academic standing. Students are eligible to apply for merit awards at any point, including prior to being accepted.

Colby-Sawyer Grant

Grant assistance is given to students based on their financial need, as well as their academic performance. Students receiving grant assistance from the college may expect to receive similar grant awards each year as long as family circumstances do not change, all application deadlines are met, and the student remains in good social and academic standing.

The Julius Nyerere Master's Scholarships

The University of Edinburgh will offer three scholarships to students from Tanzania for postgraduate Master's study in any subject offered by the University for the 2012-2013 academic session.

The Julius Nyerere Scholarship was set up in 2009 in memory of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere who led Tanganyika to independence in 1961 and became the first prime minister and later president of Tanzania. Nyerere received a scholarship in 1949 to attend the University of Edinburgh where he obtained a Masters of Arts degree that saw him study courses in English, Political Economy, Social Anthropology, British History, Economic History, Constitutional Law, and Moral Philosophy.

The Julius Nyerere Master's Scholarships will cover the full overseas tuition fee, living costs of £10,000, and a return flight from Tanzania to the UK.

The scholarships will be tenable for one academic year.

Eligibility

The scholarships will be awarded to Tanzanian citizens who are normally resident in Tanzania, and who are accepted for admission on a full-time basis for a postgraduate Master's programme of study at the University of Edinburgh.

Applicants should already have been offered a place at the University of Edinburgh and should have firmly accepted that offer or be intending to do so.

Criteria

The three Scholarships are awarded broadly on the basis of academic merit, with candidates requiring a Bachelors degree equivalent to a UK First Class Honours ('First') or Upper Division/Upper Second Class Honours ('2:1') degree.

N.B. The Julius Nyerere Master’s Scholarships are highly competitive and only the best candidates are considered. Prospective applicants should note that, to date, successful candidates for the Scholarships have all held a First Class Honours degree. Applicants with a 2:1 Honours degree will be considered if they can show a very strong track record of work experience relevant to their prospective degree.

PURPOSE OF SCHOLARSHIP

The primary purpose of the World Deaf Leadership (WDL) Scholarship Fund is to develop deaf leaders in developing nations by providing students with financial assistance for full tuition, room, and board. If applicable, the cost of participating in up to two internships during their studies at Gallaudet University will be covered. Students supported by the WDL Scholarship Fund will use this educational experience to develop a project aimed at improving the lives of deaf people at home and possibly around the world. Recipients of this scholarship must be from developing nations and have a demonstrated commitment towards returning home upon graduation.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

All applicants must:

• Be Deaf or Hard‐of‐Hearing.
• Be from a developing country.
• Demonstrate financial need.
• Be a current Gallaudet student or be admitted to Gallaudet by May 1. (Students may also be admitted to the English Language Institute)
• Demonstrate high academic achievement.
• Demonstrate active involvement in the deaf community at home.
• Submit three letters of recommendation that follow these guidelines:
1. Two letters of recommendation from people in the home country whom are familiar with the applicant’s work in the deaf community; and
2. One recommendation letter from a person at home or at Gallaudet whom is familiar with the academic ability of the applicant.

Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) - MASTERS, SHORT COURSES & PhD

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) are designed to promote capacity building within organisations in 61 countries by providing training and education to mid-career staff. The NFP is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the budget for development cooperation.

The overall aim of the NFP is to help alleviate qualitative and quantitative shortages of skilled manpower within a wide range of governmental, private and non-governmental organisations. This is done by offering fellowships to mid-career professionals to improve the capacity of their employing organisations.

The fellowship is a supplement to the candidate’s salary and a contribution towards the expenses related to the course or study programme.

NFP sub-programmes
The NFP offers you three sub-programmes to choose from:

Eligible students:

The NFP target group consists of mid-career professionals who are employed by an organization other than a large industrial, commercial and/or multinational firm. Since the training must help the organization to develop, the applicants must be nominated by their employers.

Applicants must also be nationals of one of the 57 selected countries (see ‘Eligible countries’).

Applicants must declare that they will return to their home country immediately after they complete the master program.

Applicants must have gained admission to a TU/e master course, which is on the NFP course list and have sufficient mastery of the English language.

Application and selection procedure for Master's programs

1. A candidate first has to gain admission to an eligible TU/e master program.

2. Then candidates apply for an NFP fellowship through the Netherlands embassy or consulate in their own country by completing an NFP Application Form and submitting it together with all the required documents and information to the embassy or consulate. These forms can be obtained from the embassy or consulate or can be downloaded here).

3. The Embassy checks whether the candidate meets all criteria and sends the forms to the Nuffic (Netherlands Organisation for International Cooperation in Higher Education).

4.The Nuffic decides how many fellowships will be available for each program and sends TU/e the list of NFP candidates.

5. TU/e then selects the candidates who will receive fellowships and informs candidates of its decision through the Dutch Embassy in their home country.

World Fellows Program at Yale University each year brings to Yale 14-18 highly accomplished men and women from a diverse set of countries around the world. The Fellows spend an intensive semester exploring critical issues and undergoing leadership training, with the full resources of Yale University at their disposal. Selected from outside the United States at an early mid-career point (generally five to fifteen years into their professional development), the World Fellows come from a range of fields and disciplines including government, business, nongovernmental organizations, religion, the military, media, and the arts.

Call for Applications

Yale University is currently accepting applications for the World Fellows Program 2012 from mid-career practitioners outside the US. The program is aimed at building extraordinary cohort of Fellows interested in preparing for greater roles of leadership, expanding their professional and personal horizons, and contributing to a deepening of international awareness and dialogue within the Yale community.

Core Goals

The Yale World Fellows Program has three core goals:

broadening the knowledge foundations and strengthening the leadership skills of a set of emerging leaders from around the world;
deepening the international dialogue across the Yale campus by having the World Fellows play a role as catalysts for conversations and as a source of perspectives, both formal and informal, on global issues and challenges;
creating a network of international decision makers from a range of disciplines who are connected to Yale and to each other.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

be in the mid-career stage, at least five and typically not more than twenty years into their professional careers, with demonstrated work accomplishments, and a clear indication of future contributions and excellence. The average age of a World Fellow is 38;
have an excellent command of the English language and be able to speak, read, and write in English fluently;
be a citizen of and reside in a country other than the United States
Preference may be given to candidates who have not had extensive educational or work experience in the United States, particularly at Yale.
The Yale World Fellows Program does not accept full-time students or full-time academics and does not award an academic diploma of any kind. The fellowship is designed for practitioners.

Human Rights Watch / Hellman-Hammett Grants

Human Rights Watch is currently seeking nominations for the Hellman/Hammett grant program aimed at supporting writers all around the world who have been victims of political persecution and are in financial need.

The grants, named after the late American playwright Lillian Hellman and novelist Dashiell Hammett, typically range from $1,000 to a maximum of $10,000. Forty-eight writers from 24 countries received Hellman/Hammett grants in 2011 in recognition of their commitment to free expression and the courage they showed when facing political persecution.

Besides providing much needed financial assistance, the Hellman/Hammett grants focus attention on repression of free speech and censorship by publicizing the persecution that the grant recipients endured. In some cases the publicity is a protection against further abuse. In other cases, the writers request anonymity because of the dangerous circumstances in which they and their families are living.

The writers eligible for this grant are the ones, who are targeted for expressing views that their governments oppose, for criticizing government officials or actions, or for writing about subjects that their governments do not want reported.

Over the past 22 years, more than 700 writers from 92 countries have received Hellman/Hammett grants of up to US$10,000 each, totaling more than $3 million.

The program also gives small emergency grants to writers who have an urgent need to leave their country or who need immediate medical treatment after serving prison terms or enduring torture.

Emergency nominations are accepted throughout the year.

Nieman Foundation invites US and non-US Journalists for the Fellowship Program in Global Health Reporting

The Nieman Foundation is currently seeking applications to award two fellowships in Global Health Reporting at the Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States for journalists who report on health issues. One fellowship is reserved for a US citizen and the other is for a non-US citizen.

Program Details

During the program, the fellows spend one academic year at Harvard pursuing a concentrated course, followed by upto four months of field work in a developing country. During their course at Harvard, the fellows have access to faculty and courses across the university.

Fieldwork in the developing country, which is funded by the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, aims at providing the fellows with an intensive learning and reporting experience in countries with the most pressing problems in global health.

After the field work has been concluded, the fellows will need to compile the work based on their experience and academic studies. The work can be in the form of stories, case study, or a handbook of best practices related to reporting on health issues in a developing country.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be full-time journalists (including freelancers) with at least five years’ experience. Journalists can work for news or editorial departments of newspapers, wire services, radio, television, web sites, online publications or magazines of general public interest. Photojournalists, editorial cartoonists, columnists and broadcast producers are also eligible.

Any journalism-related work completed as a university student does not count toward experience. People who work in public relations or at organizations whose primary business is not the media are not eligible.

If appropriate, the applicant’s employer should approve a leave of absence for the academic year (10 months).

Within the past two years, an applicant should not have participated in a fellowship or taken a leave of absence from work that lasted four months or longer.

There is no nomination process. Candidates nominate themselves by submitting an application and supplementary materials. There is no age limit. There are no academic prerequisites, and a college degree is not required.

DOROTHY MARCHUS SENESH FELLOWSHIP

The International Peace Research Association Foundation invites applications for the Dorothy Marchus Senesh Fellowship in Peace and Development Studies for Women from developing countries. Dorothy Senesh was a long-time activist for international peace and justice. Her husband Lawrence established this fellowship following her death in 1989. The first award was made at the IPRA 25th Anniversary meeting, July 1990, in Groningen, Netherlands and has been made biennially since. The twelfth award will be made at the 24th biennial IPRA meeting in Japan.

AWARD

Every other year (beginning in 1990) one woman receives school expenses in the amount of $5,000 per year for two years.

ELIGIBILITY

The Dorothy Senesh Fellowship is available to women from developing countries who have completed a Bachelor's degree, who have been accepted into a graduate program and whose graduate work is to be focused on issues related to the goals of IPRA. Funds will only be dispersed when the selected candidate is admitted into a graduate program. Awards are considered based on need; therefore students with substantial funding sources are less likely to be considered for the award.

Through our two-year Echoing Green Fellowship program, we provide start-up capital and technical assistance to help new leaders launch their organizations and build capacity. We offer:

Application Cycle & Dates
The Echoing Green Fellowship selection process is highly competitive. Applicants progress through three application stages with eliminations after each phase. By the end of the process, Echoing Green will have narrowed the 2500+ applications to 12-20 fellowships. The 2012 Fellows will begin their fellowship July 2012 and continue until June 30, 2014.

Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for an Echoing Green Fellowship:

• Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
• Applicants must have sufficient English fluency to participate in interviews and Echoing Green events.
• Organization must be the original idea of the applicant.
• Organization must be in a start-up phase. To be considered a start-up, the organization may have been in operation for up to two years, and Echoing Green's financial support should qualify it as significant early funder. Applicants who have only worked on their organization on a part-time basis or have yet to start the organization are generally considered eligible.
• Organization must be independent and autonomous. Organizations cannot be considered independent or autonomous if they are started under the direction of an existing organization. The applicant must be the primary decision maker for the organization’s development and management. Generally, organizations with fiscal sponsors are still considered autonomous.
• Applicants must make a full-time commitment (minimum 35 hours per week) to the organization's development for the duration of the two-year fellowship. It is expected that all selected fellows resign from their current employment to dedicate themselves full-time to their initiatives. Students will not be eligible for their fellowship stipend if their organization is put on hold due to conflicts with their studies.
• Partnerships (organizations co-founded and led by two individuals) may apply. Both partners must meet all eligibility requirements and make a full-time commitment of no fewer than 35 hours per week to the development of the organization.
• Applicants can be citizens of any nationality and their organizations can be based in any country. However applicants based in the US must have legal status to work in the US. If you are authorized to work in the US, but this status is granted to you through your current employer and you are only authorized to work for that employer, you are not eligible to apply for a US-based proposal.
• Applicants must commit to attending Echoing Green's training conferences if selected as fellows. All new fellows attend a conference in summer the year they are selected, as well as a winter conference for two years. Echoing Green covers all expenses related to these events and will announce the dates a few months prior to each conference.

Note: Organizations may be for-profit or non-profit.

The following proposals are not eligible for consideration for an Echoing Green Fellowship:

• Expansion of an existing organization that is past its start-up phase
• Research projects
• Lobbying activities
• Faith-based initiatives (In this context, faith-based implies that you are associated with a religious institution or are promoting a specific faith; if your work has a spiritual basis but is not tied to any specific religion or faith, you may be eligible for consideration)

Description
To facilitate access to Master’s degrees by students with qualifications from foreign universities, the University of Lausanne makes available around ten Master’s grants which are awarded on a competitive basis. Founded in 1537, the University of Lausanne is composed of seven faculties where approximately 12,400 students and 2,300 researchers work and study. Emphasis is placed on an interdisciplinary approach, with close cooperation between students, professors and teaching staff.

Programmes concerned
Candidates must choose a Master’s programme from among those offered by the UNIL, except the Master of Medicine. The grant may not be used for any complementary studies required to enroll on the Master’s degree and may not be used for EMBAs or Masters of Advanced studies.

Scholarship
The amount of the grant is CHF 1,600.- per month from 15 September to 15 July, for a duration not exceeding the regulation minimum period of the programme (according to the programme, one-and-a-half years or two years subject to deduction for paid placements or exempt semesters, if any). Abandonment of the programme results in suspension of the grant.

Eligibility
The candidate must be the holder of a degree from a foreign university.
The qualification held by the candidate must be deemed equivalent to the UNIL Bachelor’s degree.

How to apply?
Candidates complete the “UNIL Master’s Grant” form (can be downloaded here) and submit their application to the Office for socio-cultural affairs (SASC, Unicentre, University of Lausanne, CH-1015 Lausanne, info.sasc@unil.ch) by 15 December 2011 at the latest. All the documents that need to be sent with the application can be found in the application form found above. The application is examined by the University Rectorate to determine whether the candidate is admissible. In the event of a positive decision, the application is forwarded by the SASC to the UNIL Faculty responsible for the Master’s on which the candidate wishes to be enrolled. The Faculty selects applications and notifies the SASC of its opinion based on the candidate’s qualities, motivation and suitability for the Master’s programme. The SASC forwards shortlisted applications to the selection committee which will award grants to students meeting all criteria according to the available budget.

Selection criteria
The grants are intended more particularly for students who distinguished themselves in their university studies and who have difficulty meeting their financial needs for the duration of the Master’s. It is however necessary that the candidates have sufficient financial means to support themselves during the complementary studies that may be required prior to enroll on the Master’s degree.

Masters Scholarships at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands

Description
The University of Groningen has a long tradition in the study of international issues and development cooperation in the fields of international law, international economic relations, peace and security, non-Western demography, food security in developing countries and reproductive health, to name but a few examples. Long-term cooperation with a number of universities in Africa and Asia is a major constituent of this international involvement. The emphasis lies on improving education, training academic staff and reinforcing the infrastructure of these universities. Contacts with other universities in various countries, including India and Indonesia, are maintained by the faculties in Groningen. A considerable number of students from Africa and Asia follow education programmes in Groningen, and their number is increasing annually.

The primary objective of the Eric Bleumink Fund, established on 23 May 2000, is to provide financial support to Master’s students and PhD students from developing countries who wish to pursue a Master’s degree or a doctorate (see the first two columns of Appendix 1). for the names of the countries that are considered developing countries). This initiative will not only improve the cooperation between the University of Groningen and universities in developing countries, but will also raise the level of academic expertise in these countries.

- Travel to and from the Netherlands
- Arrival and accommodation in the Netherlands
- Allowances- The allowances mentioned are applicable in the Netherlands. The amounts will change if the student or researcher is studying or working in another country. Recipients are entitled to the following allowances:
• A living allowance of € 970 per month for food and accommodation for Master’s students. In the case of a short stay in the Netherlands, the University of Groningen will make lodging arrangements for this period. The costs of rent, amounting up to a maximum of € 450 for master’s students will be deducted from the living allowance. In that case € 520 remains of the monthly allowance for Master’s students.
• A settling allowance of € 275 for extra expenses incurred when arriving in the Netherlands. This lump sum is paid along with the first monthly allowance.
• Travel costs for the journey from Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol) to Groningen and back.
• A study allowance of € 310 per year for books and other study material.
• The expenses for the visa at the Netherlands Embassy and the Foreign Police Department in the Netherlands will be reimbursed.
• All tuition fees for the Master’s programme will be covered by the Eric Bleumink Fund.
- Expenses refund
• Occasional travel in the Netherlands in connection with the programme or research will be refunded. Such travel has to be approved by the supervisor of the study programme.
• In the case of excursions or field trips, extra expenses will be paid over and above the cost of standard accommodation if these trips involve at least one overnight stay.

Eligibility
Criteria for approval are: (a) academic excellence, shown by academic performance and may be confirmed by letters of recommendation from university professors; (b) contribution of candidate’s education in terms of strengthening the scientific capacity in the candidate’s home country; (c) perspectives to a long-term linkage between the home institution and the University of Groningen. Moreover, applicants should:

be nationals of and have their permanent residence in a developing country
have a good command of the English language
be in good health, so that health insurance in the Netherlands can be arranged
be available for the whole period of the fellowship and be able to take part in the entire study programme

Applications for student scholarships can be submitted by students from one of the eligible countries for a Master’s or equivalent programme at the University of Groningen.

Master’s degree programmes
1. First the candidate should apply for admission to a study programme at the University of Groningen .
2. When the candidate applies for this admission, he or she must indicate on the application form that his/her study performance is excellent and that he/she wishes to be nominated for a Eric Bleumink Fund scholarship.
3. If the study programme agrees with the candidacy for a EBF scholarship, they will send a standard application form including the motivation of the candidate to the Board of the Eric Bleumink Fund prior to 1 March. Per studyprogramme only two candidates can be nominated.
4. The Board of the Eric Bleumink Fund will take a decision during their meeting in March.
5. The studyprogramme and the candidate will both be informed on the decision taken by the Board.
6. If a candidate is selected the coordinator and the candidate will have contact on the details of his or her arrival. If necessary he/she can contact the Board of the Eric Bleumink Fund for extra assistance.

The Academy's distance-learning programs bring relevant courses to the widest possible community of practitioners, students, and academics. Anita Borg believed that technology affects all aspects of our economic, political, social and personal lives. A technology rebel with a cause, in her life she fought tirelessly to ensure that technology’s impact would be a positive one. It was this vision that inspired Anita in 1997 to found the Institute for Women and Technology. Today this organization continues on her legacy and bears her name, The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology (www.anitaborg.org).

Dr. Anita Borg devoted her adult life to revolutionizing the way we think about technology and dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields. Her combination of technical expertise and fearless vision continues to inspire and motivate countless women to become active participants and leaders in creating technology.

In her honor, Google is proud to honor Anita's memory and support women in technology with the 2011 Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship. Google hopes to encourage women to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders in the field.

Google Anita Borg Scholarship recipients will each receive a $10,000 award for the 2011-2012 academic year. A group of female undergraduate and graduate students will be chosen from the applicant pool, and scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of each candidate's academic background and demonstrated leadership. All scholarship recipients and finalists will be invited to attend the Annual Google Scholars' Retreat in Mountain View, California in 2011.

The Annual Google Scholars' Retreat at the Googleplex

We know how important a supportive peer network can be for a student's success. All Google scholarship recipients and finalists will be invited to visit Google headquarters in Mountain View, California for the 2011 Google Scholars' Retreat. The retreat will include workshops, speakers, panelists, breakout sessions and social activities scheduled over a 3-day period. Students will have the opportunity to explore the Googleplex and enjoy the San Francisco Bay Area as they get to know other talented computer science students from across the country.

Who can apply?

Applicants must satisfy all of the following criteria to be eligible:

be a female student entering her senior year of undergraduate study or be enrolled in a graduate program in the 2011-2012 academic year at a university in the United States;
be enrolled in Computer Science or Computer Engineering program, or a closely related technical field as a full-time student for the 2011-2012 academic year;
maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or 4.5 on a 5.0 scale or equivalent in your current program.

Nanjing University Scholarship Master and PhD Program for International Students

Chinese Government Scholarship is a scholarship set up by the Chinese government to facilitate students and scholars from all over the world to conduct their study and research in Chinese universities. The scholarship aims to increase the mutual understanding and friendship between people of China and people from the rest of the world and to develop the communication and cooperation between China and the rest of the world in the field of Education, Technology, Culture and Economics.

Nanjing University is located in the heart of a historical city Nanjing. It is surrounded by a beautiful scenery, excellent environment and accessible transportation. The University is currently host to 23 schools and 65 departments offering 162 majors for master degrees and 93 PhD degrees. A master degree takes 3 years while a PhD degree takes 3 to 4 years. Nanjing University uses a credit system, acquiring the total number of credits for the degree and successfully passing the oral defense of the Graduation Paper for a student to graduate.

Term Of Scholarship: Scholarship will be tenable for three years and four years from the date of award for masters’ degree and PhD degree, respectively. One-year preparatory education in Chinese language prior to grantees’ study of his major will be provided with full scholarship benefits if deemed necessary.

Program Description:
This program offers international students the chance to delve into learning about China’s economy, philosophy, history, culture, education, the development of contemporary Chinese society, and other fields, as well as a comparative perspective to other countries.
The program will consist of three main focuses:

Chinese Philosophy and History,
Chinese Society and Economy,
Chinese Language, Culture, and Literature.

The program will have the benefits of traditional academic disciplines in addition to a variety of teaching methods including case studies, academic discussions, social practices, and research to foster students’ ability to analyze problems within different fields in China, and assist students with future work experience in China. Using China’s vast domestic resources, students will have hands-on research experience, investigating all aspects of China, including historical and cultural, social, economic, and contemporary issues.

Eligibility

Academic Background: Applicant must have completed a four-year undergraduate degree for master degree pursuer and a master degree or equivalent for PhD degree pursuer.
Chinese Language: Applicant must be willing to learn Chinese language, if applicable, and receive education in Chinese language.

Health: Applicant must be mentally and physically healthy.
Students currently studying in China are not applicable. Students who have been granted for other Chinese scholarship or funding（2012-2013） are not applicable.

Scholarship

Allowance: Grantee will be provided a monthly stipend of RMB 1,700 and RMB 2,000 for masters’ degree student and PhD degree student, respectively. School Fees: Fees for matriculation and tuition will be paid by the Chinese government. Health Insurance: A health insurance will be provided to the grantee by CSC for the entire duration of his/her scholarship. Accommodation: A free accommodation will be provided to a grantee in the International Dormitory of the University for the entire duration of the scholarship.

Applicants for the Quota Scheme

The Quota Scheme is a funding scheme offered by the Norwegian Government to students from certain developing countries, countries in Central and Eastern Europe, and Central Asia.

At the moment the University of Bergen has 154 study places financed by this scheme. The number of applicants exceeds, by far, the number of new students that are granted admission each year.

Only students at Master and doctoral levels will be financed by the Quota Scheme.

Nationality
Applicants from certain developing countries, countries in Central and Eastern Europe are eligible for funding.

Priority
Only applicants who are affiliated with institutions with a formal, active collaboration agreement with the University of Bergen will be considered for admission.

Special conditions
As a general rule applicants must have resided in their home country for at least one year prior to the intended study period in Norway.

Applicants residing in Norway can apply if they have been financed by a Norwegian state scholarship or research grant, and if they have not been in Norway for more than two years when the programme starts.

Academic requirements
Applicants must normally have obtained an undergraduate degree or Bachelor's degree of 4 years' duration, or have an equivalent educational background. For information regarding equivalency, see country list.

The degree must include courses equalling at least 1.5 years of full-time studies in a subject relevant to that of the programme applied for.

Admission is extremely competative, applicants should have excellent academic records. Minimum 2 nd Class, Upper Division/B or the equivalent is normally required in order to be considered for admission.

Requirements to documentation
All copies must be certified (stamped, signed and dated) by the issuing institution or by a Notary Public. If the original language of your documents is not English or a Scandinavian language, officially certified copies of the translation must accompany certified copies of your documents in original language.

Please note that some Master's degree programmes may have additional admission requirements specific to their programme. Please refer to the website of each programme for more information.
English language proficiency
Documented proficiency in English is required for admission.

Master's degree programmes
The University of Bergen has established a number of 2-year Master's degree programmes taught in English and only candidates admitted to these programmes are eligible for financial support by the Quota Scheme.

Please note that some programmmes are not offered every year.
New students are admitted every second year to the programmes in Health Promotion and Anthropology of Development (2012, 2014, etc) and Gender and Development (2011, 2013, etc).
Please note that subjects NOT offered at the University of Bergen include:

Business Administration and Accounting
Veterinary Science
Law studies: The Faculty of Law deals predominantly with the Norwegian legal system, and the professional degree is intended to train lawyers to work in Norway. Law studies require a very good command of the Norwegian language.

Doctoral programmes
Students admitted to a Master's degree programme may qualify for admission to doctoral studies during or upon completion of their master programme. Only rarely are candidates admitted directly to a doctoral degree on the basis of a non-Norwegian degree unless they have an established agreement with the relevant department and have submitted an approved thesis proposal as the major part of the application.

Description
The aim of the International PhD Program of the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology and the Friedrich Miescher Laboratory is to develop the minds and skills of promising young scientists by providing outstanding interdisciplinary training in cutting-edge biological research. The PhD program is open to highly qualified students from Germany and any other country. Complementing their scientific research, PhD students are required to attend courses offered on the Max Planck Campus and at the University of Tübingen, participate in research seminars and present their research findings at internal symposia.

The program language is English. You will need to provide evidence that you are comfortable communicating in written and oral English. Graduate Record Examinations – Their GRE Institution Code is 4791. In general, successful applicants have scored above 500 on the verbal test and above 700 on the quantitative test.

Scholarship
Within one week og arriving in Tübingen, you are required to register at the city office. You will receive a registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung). Next, you will visit the Foreigners’ Office (Ausländerbehörde) located in the same building, to apply for a Residency Permit (Aufenthaltsgenehmigung). During your first visit, you will be handed forms and be given another appointment to present several documents:

the copy of the registration certificate;
documentation of your health insurance (see also ’5. Health Insurance’);
copy of your PhD contract with MPI or FML;
a passport photo.
For the first days or weeks you can stay in one of the Max Planck Guest House rooms. You are required to have health insurance coverage for the duration of your stay in Germany.It is necessary to open a regular account – Girokonto – at a local or online bank. You can take part in the German lessons offered at our institute, in which case you have to pay 30% of the fees and the rest is paid for by the MPI.
PhD students are generally funded by scholarships from the Max-Planck-Society. Scholarships are initially awarded for a period of two years and commonly extended for up to two more years. Students are also encouraged to apply for scholarships from other funding agencies. Monthly Scholarship Rate:

INTRODUCTION

UNESCO designed the project “UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships Programme” (UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme) in the framework of the Japanese Funds-in-Trust for the Capacity-Building of Human Resources which was established in November 2000 by the Government of Japan to enable UNESCO to give impetus to research in four areas under UNESCO’s Priority Programme Areas.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships Programme (UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme) funded under the Japanese Funds-in-Trust for the capacity-building of Human Resources will aim, in particular, to impact on capacity-building and research activities in the following areas: Environment (with particular attention to Water Sciences); Intercultural Dialogue; Information and Communication Technologies; and Peaceful conflict resolution. No other research topics will be considered.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants, a maximum of TWO from each applying National Commission, must meet the following general criteria:

1. Candidates under this Programme must be post-graduate researchers, already holding either an M.A. or M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) and wishing to pursue research work abroad (preferably in their own region) with a view to enhancing knowledge in one of the four specific fields mentioned in paragraph D.1 below. Thus, those who are in the process of completing their Master’s degree must have completed it PRIOR to taking up their Fellowship.

2. Candidates must be persons of high intellectual promise who may be expected to make significant contributions to their country on return.

3. Candidates must be no more than 40 years of age. Thus, applicants born before 1 January 1972 will not be considered under the Programme.

4. The selected Fellow must carry out the research under the auspices of an academic supervisor in a host institution. Confirmation of acceptance from the academic supervisor is imperative.

5. Priority attention will be given to:

* Women candidatures
* Candidates from least developed countries (LDCs)
* Palestinian researchers

6. Candidates must be proficient in reading and writing the language of instruction in the proposed country of study/research.

7. Applicants must be in good health (both physically and mentally).

It is the National Commission’s responsibility to select the two candidates whose applications it wishes to submit to UNESCO. The application(s) should reach the Section of Participation Programme and Fellowships, UNESCO, 7, Place de Fontenoy 75352 Paris 07 SP before 13 January 2012 midnight and an advance copy may be sent by fax to: 33.1.45.68.55.03.

The application must include the following attachments:

(i) The UNESCO Fellowship application form duly completed in duplicate. Two recent photographs (obligatory) should be included with the form.

(ii) Certified copies of degrees or diplomas (including transcript of grades) in duplicate. Proof of having obtained a Master’s Degree must be included.

(iii) A letter of recommendation from someone familiar with the candidate’s work.

(iv) A host institute’s letter of acceptance (i.e. the institute that has accepted the candidate for work should she/he be selected for a Fellowship). This letter of acceptance must indicate that the host institute confirms its willingness to provide the relevant research facilities required by the candidate in the chosen field of specialization.

(v) The certificate of language proficiency (on the UNESCO form) duly completed in duplicate for the language of the country of study (should this be different from the candidate’s mother tongue) issued by an official authority.

(vi) A detailed description, one to two page(s) (maximum), in either English or French, of the research work for which the candidature is being put forward. The research proposal should cover the following points:
• Why? The concrete nature of the proposed project’s contribution to the fields listed in paragraph D.1 above; its innovative, original aspects; and the scope and purpose of the research project. The candidate should demonstrate the reasons the theoretical and practical knowledge or training acquired at the host institution would be beneficial to her/his on-going research project.

• What? The expected results or impact of the research project being undertaken.

• How? Describe the proposed arrangements for conducting the research.

• Where? The proposed country where research will be undertaken (one to two countries maximum) and the name and address of the host institute.

• When? The timeframe explicitly stating the proposed starting date and the suggested duration of research which should be of three months minimum and nine months maximum.

• How much? A detailed budget estimate indicating the resources required for the candidate to undertake the proposed research. The amount should be determined according to the proposed duration and place of research (between US$6,000 to US$10,000). The amount should not exceed US$10,000. All figures must be shown in US dollars and must be included on a separate page. The amount indicated should cover, exclusively, the international or domestic travel costs for the approved itinerary and personal subsistence abroad, etc. (The object of this Programme is to provide research fellowships so it is considered that in most cases tuition fees will not apply). Applicants should be realistic in compiling their proposed budgets, and consider that an average of US$1,000/US$1,800 per month for accommodation and meals (including local transportation and incidentals) should not be exceeded. Applications where funds requested are judged to be excessive in relation to the objectives and importance of the project are likely to be considered for a smaller grant.

(Note: The following costs are not eligible: computer or equipment purchases; publication costs; attendance at conferences, unless a case can be made that such attendance is an integral part of the research and would make a direct and significant contribution to the outcome of the development of the research project.)

UNESCO and Japan attach the greatest importance to originality and quality. Consideration will be given only to well-planned research proposals which demonstrate innovation, imagination and relevance, and which promise to contribute to knowledge in the four specific areas mentioned in paragraph D.1 above.

Files which are incomplete or which are received after the deadline for application, as well as applications that do not meet the requirements mentioned above, will not be taken into consideration.

FACILITIES OFFERED BY UNESCO/JAPAN

The Fellowships financed by Japan and administered by UNESCO will consist of the following:

• A maximum amount between US$6,000 to US$10,000 will be awarded to selected candidates. The amount, to be paid in two or three instalments, is intended to cover research costs only, and will not be negotiable.

• No other costs will be considered and grants will be neither extended nor renewed.

SELECTION OF BENEFICIARIES

A Selection Committee made up of experts in the four areas listed above will make recommendations for the final decision of the Director-General of UNESCO. Applications will be judged on the basis of the merit of each application and of its pertinence to the UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme

Selected candidates will receive a Letter of Award.

Candidates who have not been informed of their selection by 1 September 2012 should consider that their applications have not been approved in the selection process.

DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION REGARDING THE RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH UNDERTAKEN UNDER THIS PROGRAMME

Once the Fellowship has expired, the beneficiaries will be encouraged to disseminate the results of their research. No prior approval of UNESCO will be required for publication of a scholarly paper resulting from research done while benefiting from the UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme. However, the Fellow will be asked to acknowledge UNESCO, UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme and the Government of Japan in their paper as having provided support for the Fellowship and the Fellow will be required to send a copy of the report and/or printed article to the Organization for information. It should be emphasized that UNESCO has no obligation to publish the scholarly papers and no allowance will be provided for that purpose.

Selected beneficiaries will be required to submit an interim and a final report describing the results of the research undertaken. Fellows will be required to send UNESCO a one-page summary with their report that will be reproduced later in a leaflet and disseminated widely by UNESCO.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships for European Doctorate in Law and Economics (EDLE)

Description

The importance of Law and Economics within modern legal scholarship continues to expand. Today, Law and Economics has become an important part of the legal curriculum in most American and many European law schools. However, in Europe, there has, until now, been a clear lack of a structured programme in the economic analysis of law on the doctoral level. European Doctorate in Law and Economics (EDLE) is an excellence programme sponsored by the European Commission under the Erasmus Mundus scheme.

It offers the unique opportunity to study Law and Economics on a PhD-level in (at least) three different countries. The programme prepares economists and lawyers of high promise for an academic career in a research field of growing importance or for responsible positions in government, research organizations and international consulting groups. Three of the leading European universities in the area of Law and Economics, the Universities of Bologna, Hamburg and Rotterdam, have established a joint Doctoral programme especially tailored to provide doctoral students with systematic and methodical training in the economic analysis of law.

The EDLE presents an attractive option for both economists and lawyers. There can be little doubt that legal thinking can benefit strongly from economic reasoning. At the same time, a deep understanding of economic issues cannot occur in ignorance of the legal and institutional background in which the problem at hand is embedded. The study of Law and Economics assists scholars from both backgrounds in integrating these perspectives.

Scholarship
Conditional on the approval of the European Commission, for the academic year 2011-2012, the following scholarships are offered:
9 scholarships by the European Commission under the Erasmus Mundus scheme (5 for Category A applicants, 1 for Western Balkans applicants, 3 for Category B applicants),
6 by the partner universities (University of Bologna, Hamburg Institute of Law and Economics, Rotterdam Institute of Law and Economics).
Additional scholarships may become available at a later stage.

Mundus Category A scholarships are reserved to applicants who: i) do not come from an “EU-area” country (EU Member States, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland); and ii) are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc.) for a period equal or longer than a total of 12 months over the last five years in “EU-area” countries. This rule does not apply to non “EU-area” candidates who have previously received an Erasmus Mundus scholarship in order to follow an Erasmus Mundus Master Programme.

Western Balkans applicants (from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia) apply for a specific position, under the same conditions of Cat. A applicants.

Mundus Category B scholarships are reserved to applicants who do not fulfil the Category A criteria defined above.
Mundus scholarships provide a gross contribution of Euro 33,600 per year, for 3 years. This roughly amounts to a net income of Euro 1,600 per month.
On top of the monthly salary, Mundus scholars benefit from a fixed contribution to the travel, installation and any other types of costs for a maximum of Euro 7,500 (Cat. A) or Euro 3,000 (Cat B.).

The scholarships offered by the Erasmus University of Rotterdam provide a gross income of approx. Euro 25,000 per year, for 4 years (net income of about Euro 1,400 per month); those offered by the University of Bologna approx. Euro 13,638.47 (gross) per year for 3 years (net income of about Euro 1,038.61), with an additional 50% increase for the periods of research spent abroad (up to 18 months total). The scholarships offered by the University of Hamburg amounts to approx. Euro 13,200 per year for 3 years (net monthly amount Euro 930 after insurance deduction).

Applicants for the Mundus scholarships can only apply to a maximum of 3 Mundus programmes throughout (Master or Doctorates). For the Academic Year 2012/2013 tuition fees amount to Euro 3,600 per year. The scholarships listed above also cover the tuition fees.

Eligibility
Admission to the programme is open to applicants with a diploma or a bachelor and master degree in law or economics, or a comparable university degree (second cycle qualification) required by the partner universities for admission to doctoral studies.
EDLE is a structured programme in the economic analysis of law on a doctoral level. Therefore, a thorough previous knowledge in the field of law and economics is required, as well as basic knowledge of microeconomics and calculus. If you lack specific knowledge on the economic analysis of law, you should consider applying for the EMLE programme (to find more about this programme, please click here), where this knowledge can be acquired.

How to apply?
Applications are submitted online (to apply online, please click here (however, the online application will be available since 1 November 2011))and must include the following documents:

1. CV with information on academic, professional and other education (Europass model),

2. official transcripts of previous degrees (in English),
3. two reference letters,
4. a letter of motivation with a prospective research proposal and,
5. a certificate of English proficiency (FCE, CAE, CPE, BEC, British Chamber of Commerce, Trinity College, TOEFL, IELTS) in case the applicant’s native language is not English. Applicants who have attended, for a period of at least 6 months, to university courses held in English do not need to submit the certificate,
6. academic work, if available (at most two papers),
7. copy of valid ID.

The deadline for applications is 9th January 2012 (CET) for all applicants. Applications can only be submitted online.

Applicants will be selected on the basis of their academic merit and their capability of carrying out high-level scientific research activity in the field of the economic analysis of law, and in compliance with Mundus regulations. Good knowledge of English is a prerequisite.

Switzerland is offering a limited number of university scholarships to Tanzanian students for the academic year 2012/2013 for studies at one of Switzerland's 10 Universities and 2 Federal Institutes of Technology. The documents for the application are available for download:

The university scholarships are intended for post-graduate students only, with as special emphasis put on Research Fellowships. Applicants who already hold a Master degree and wish to undertake a second (or 3rd) Master degree are not considered a priority for the Swiss Government Scholarships. Multiplying the Master degrees will not be encouraged by the Federal Commission for Scholarships (FCS). Besides, please be aware that for Master programs, the FCS does not pay for Master tuition fees.

Candidates should not be older than 35 years (i.e. born after 1 January 1977)

Before applying, you must find out whether your planned study program or research project can be carried out at the university concerned. For Research fellowships, the applicant must contact a Professor in Switzerland willing to supervise his research project. A copy of this contact must imperatively be part of the application package. Should this contact not be made, the Swiss Embassy will reject the candidature. For Master programs, the applicant must, at the same time he applies for the Swiss Government Scholarship, apply for the chosen Master program. The two procedures are separate ones and the applicant must undertake both procedures.

For Master programs, the applicant has to be proficient in the teaching language in order to be eligible for a Swiss Government Scholarship and must provide the relevant language certificate with the application package. If the teaching language at your chosen university in Switzerland is English, and you have completed your bachelor cursus in English, a letter from the university confirming this will be sufficient.

It is essential that you fill in the application forms electronically and print them out to attach to your file. Forms filled in by hand will not be accepted.

Each application form and all the annexed documents required have to be sent in triplicate in the given order (see p. 12 of Application Guidelines). The complete application files should be submitted to the Embassy not later than 29 December 2011.

All documents which are not in English, German or French must be accompanied by certified translations in one of these 3 languages.

Important: Please carefully read the Application guidelines. These guidelines outline all the important information and requirements to prepare a good application.

Applications will not be taken into consideration if they are in one of the following situations:

The application is incomplete, does not respect the guidelines or is badly prepared
The applicant is older than 35 (born prior to 1.1.1977)

Applications for 2 or more Universities. Applicants must apply for only 1 University

The applicant is already attending the first year of a Master Program in one of the Swiss Universities. Students already embarked in a Master program in one of the Swiss Universities are not eligible for a Swiss Government Scholarship.

Language certificate (or letter from the university confirming proficiency in English) is missing
The applicant is required to attend a complementary program or to catch up ECTS credits in order to comply with the University requirements

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR TRAINING AND MASTER PROGRAMMES IN FLANDERS, BELGIUM

VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from Africa, Asia and Latin-America to follow a training or master programme at a Dutch speaking university or university college in Belgium. The eligible training or master programmes are taught in English. They are designed for people in positions of responsibility in civil society.

The scholarships cover all related expenses. For application, please visit the website of the training or master programme. The deadline for application for the master programmes: 1 February 2012; for training programmes: check the programme websites.

Eligibility criteria

You can apply for a scholarship if you meet the following requisites:

You are a resident AND national of one of the countries on the country list (not necessarily the same country for residence and nationality). Please note that candidates must reside in one of these countries at the moment of application.

You are not older than 40 years* if you apply for a scholarship to follow a master programme. Or you are not older than 45 years* if you apply for a scholarship to follow a training programme. (* on 1 January 2012)

You have the required English proficiency. You need a proof of at least 1 year of comprehensive English-based instruction at a university or recognized equivalent. If not, a TOEFL test is required with a minimum total score of 550 on the paper based test (PBT), or 79 on an internet based test (IBT); or an IELTS test with a minimum overall band score of 6,5; or a proof of another test of similar level as TOEFLE or IELTS.

Professional experience and employment perspectives are not required for a master programme, but they can be a competitive advantage for selection, depending on the programme. Present employment or reintegration perspectives are required for a training programme. The candidate must be currently employed or have a written (future) employer’s guarantee of (re)integration in an employment where the acquired knowledge and skills will be immediately applicable.

Earlier applications and scholarships: You do not apply for more than one VLIR-UOS scholarship a year. You have never received a master scholarship funded by the Belgian government before. You are only admissible for a training programme scholarship if you have not received a VLIR-UOS scholarship for a training programme before.

When you are an applicant from a university engaged in a VLIR-IUC partnership, it is required that the Flemish or local IUC coordinator declares that you are not linked to an IUC funded department. If you are linked to such a department, you do not qualify for a scholarship from the scholarship programme from VLIR-UOS but can apply for funding from the IUC budget in case you would be academically admitted.

For selection we take into account the following criteria:

Motivation: It is essential that the candidate’s motivation demonstrates the possibility of transferring knowledge or creating extension activities, and having a specific developmental dimension.

Professional experience, preferably in a research institution, a higher education institution, the government sector (national/regional/local), the sector of social economy, or an NGO. Preferably expertise in development relevant matters.

Present employment/reintegration perspectives, preferably in a research institution, a higher education institution, the government sector (national/regional/local), the sector of social economy, or an NGO. Preferably with the possibility to generate an impact through the transfer of knowledge, extension activities or otherwise. Not in the commercial profit sector. Previous scholarships: Prioririty will be given to the application of a candidate for a master programme who did not already has been granted a previous master scholarship. For a candidate for a training programme, the selection committee assesses the opportunity of a VLIR-UOS scholarship award, taking into consideration the candidates’ previous study and scholarship curriculum.

Gender: In case of two equally qualified candidates of different sexes, preference will be given to the female candidate. The selection commission will aim at a parity or relative balance between the number of men and the number of women awarded a VLIR-UOS scholarship.

Regional balance: The selection commission will try to ensure that 50% of a programme’s scholarships are granted to candidates from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Social background: In case of two equally qualified candidates, preference will be given to candidates from a disadvantaged area within their country or an ethnic or social minority group, especially when these candidates can provide proof of leadership potential.

How to apply

You can apply from October 2011 for a scholarship by following the procedure below:

1. Go to the information page of the training or master programme of your interest.
2. Look for the inscription link on the programme website and apply via the application form of the Flemish host university or university college.
3. Receive a return e-mail from the Flemish host university or university college.
4. Send a printout of your application file along with all required documents (diploma transcripts, motivation, etc…) to the International Office of the host university or university college (not to VLIR-UOS!). You will find the information on the website of the programme.

Then you have correctly applied and can your application be considered. Scholarship application deadlines are:

Scholarship: Scholarships are worth €48,000 which covers two-year tuition fee of Euro 16,000 and living allowances to study the MALLL programme.

The European Commission offers a limited number of Erasmus Mundus Category A scholarships for third country (non-EU) students. The number of applications by third country students must be limited to a maximum of three Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses. Erasmus Mundus provides a response to the challenges of globalisation faced by European higher education today, in particular the need to adapt education systems to the demands of the knowledge society, to enhance the attractiveness and visibility of European higher education worldwide and to stimulate the process of convergence of degree structures across Europe. The programme’s aim is to promote European higher education, to help improve and enhance the career prospects of students and to promote intercultural understanding through cooperation with third countries, in accordance with EU external policy objectives in order to contribute to the sustainable development of third countries in the field of higher education

Description
The European Commission offers a limited number of Erasmus Mundus Category A scholarships for third country (non-EU) students. Category A scholarships can be awarded to students from all countries other than the 27 EU member states and EEA/EFTA states: Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway, and the Swiss Confederation. Mobility tracks for batch 6 (2011-2013)
In the academic year 2011-2012, all MALLL students in batch 6 will study the first year at the Institute of Education, University of London. Both self-funded and scholarship European students can opt to study one module of the second semester in July-August 2012 at Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne, Australia. The third semester will be at Deusto University, Spain. For the fourth semester, students can choose between the three European universities to write their thesis.

Mobility tracks for batch 7 (2012-2014)
In the academic year 2012-2014, all MALLL students with Erasmus Mundus in batch 7 will study the first year at the Danish School of Education in Copenhagen, Denmark. Both self-funded and scholarship European students can opt to study one module of the second semester in July-August 2013 at Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne, Australia. The third semester will be at Deusto University, Spain. For the fourth semester, students can choose between the three European universities to write their thesis.

Application results
The applicants who are not selected for the scholarships will receive notification by email in March 2012.

The scholarship applicants on the main list and reserve list will receive the final results of their applications in early May 2012 after the Consortium has received the final selection approval from the European Commission.

When a main list student withdraws, he/she is replaced by the first eligible candidate on the reserve list. In this particular case, the eligibility criterion concerns the nationality of the reserve list candidate and the rule concerning the presence of a maximum of two nationals from the same country among the scholarship holders for a given category. If there are already two other students with the same nationality on the main list, the consortium will have to take the next eligible candidate respecting its own ranking list in line with the European Commission regulations.

Eligibility
Category A scholarships can be awarded to third-country masters students selected by EMMC consortia who come from a country other than a European country and who are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, training or work) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of these countries.

Scholarship candidates must have already obtained a first higher education degree or demonstrate a recognised equivalent level of learning according to national legislation and practices (Individuals who have already benefited from an EMMC scholarship are not eligible for a second scholarship in order to follow the same or another EMMC).

Description of South – South Sandwich Scholarship 2012

FSC awards up to four visiting Sandwich scholarships to PhD students from developing countries for a period of six months in 2012. The Center wishes to attract outstanding PhD students pursuing a career in academia or development collaboration. The scholarship aims at increasing their previously gained scientific knowledge and skills relevant to food security related issues. Successful candidates will receive a scholarship for conducting PhD thesis related research studies and hence adding value to the PhD thesis and contributing to the mission of FSC.
For research collaboration, each successful candidate will work with the research staff of one of FSC’s partner universities or an other research center or development organization located in a de-veloping country (e.g., one of the centers of the CGIAR) to conduct a specific research project con-tributing to the mission of FSC and relevant to her/his PhD thesis. Funding for research is expected to be provided by the applicant’s and/or supervisor’s institute and/or other organizations. The objec-tive of the research collaboration is to write at least one joint, peer-reviewed journal publication or paper to be presented at an international conference that contributes to FSC’s mission and that is re-levant to the PhD thesis. Successful candidates are expected to present their research proposal, state of research and preliminary results in the related seminars in the hosting research institute. Participa-tion in teaching and training activities on a limited scale, if possible, is desired.

Inter-regional South-South collaborations (e.g., from Africa to Latin America, or from Latin America to Asia) are encouraged in particular.

Furthermore, FSC aims at establishing an active, long-lasting collaboration with the supported re-searchers and their home institutes through an interactive alumni-network.
The scholarship is awarded for a stay at a partner institute, research center, or development organiza-tion located in a developing country. The monthly grant is 500 Euros. In addition, FSC pays for trav-eling to/from the partner institute. Health insurance and other costs must be paid for from the stipend.

Required skills

The applicant must provide proof of:

• outstanding study performance in agricultural, nutritional, natural, social, economic or political sciences, or related disciplines with specification on food security related issues with a minimum MSc grade of 2.5;

• working on doctoral studies at her/his home institute by the time of application and by the time the scholarship program commences;

• latest academic degree completed no more than 6 years prior to start of scholarship

• agreement on project proposal with host institute in the field of the own PhD thesis;

• confirmation of support of the host institute in a developing country;

• track record of knowledge in the proposed field of study;

• plan to return to his/her home country / country of residence and institute;

• excellent proficiency in oral and written English.

Furthermore, the applicant must:

• be able to conduct innovative research;

• have excellent interpersonal skills and team spirit;

• be able and willing to work well in an interdisciplinary, multicultural environment with individu-als from different scientific, societal and cultural backgrounds and with organizations from the public, private and civil society sector;

• be available for the entire period of the research stay of 6 months in 2012;

• be a national of a developing country according to OECD DAC list.

The Center wishes to attract outstanding PhD students pursuing a career in academia or development collaboration. The scholarship aims at increasing their previously gained scientific knowledge and skills relevant to food security related issues. The successful candidates will receive scholarships for participating in the PhD program “Global Food Security” to conduct their doctorates.

The scholarship is given for a stay at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany. The monthly grant is EUR 1,000 (for the time in Germany, EUR 500 for the time of the field research). In addition, FSC pays for traveling to/from Hohenheim. Health insurance and other costs must be paid for from the stipend.

Selection criteria
Besides the general selection criteria for the PhD program “Global Food Security” (see announce-ment of the PhD program “Global Food Security”), the following criteria have to be met additionally, if applying for an “Excellence scholarship”:

- Latest academic degree completed no more than 6 years prior to start of scholarship;
- Indication for return to his/her home country and institute;
- Be a national of a developing country according to OECD DAC list.

What is the purpose of the ESED scholarship?

Key Dates

An Academic Panel consisting of accomplished representatives from Europe, North America and Japan will review the applications. All selections are final and all applicants will be notified.

Awards will be directly deposited (in US$) into the accounts of the Institution where you are enrolled and provided to you on a regular basis as long as you are making satisfactory progress toward achieving your academic or research requirements.

What are my obligations to the Partnership if I am selected?
You are expected to complete your degree or your research, update the organization about your progress and publish your results. You are required to acknowledge the Partnership’s support when publishing or making presentations on your research and results. We may ask you to present your results at a Partnership function, in which case your out of pocket expenses incurred to make the presentation will be covered by the organization.

The Erasmus Mundus Masters Program in Public Policy (Mundus MAPP)

The Erasmus Mundus Masters Program in Public Policy (Mundus MAPP) is a 2-year-long international Masters course funded by the European Commission. It directly responds to the educational needs created by the rapidly changing global environment and new public policy challenges. Mundus MAPP equips graduates with the conceptual knowledge and hard skills that are necessary for understanding and decisively intervening in contemporary transnational policy problems, from climate change to international terrorism or financial regulatory failure. It provides a detailed and systematic understanding of how political institutions, processes and public policies operate and interact from the global political economy through to national and local levels with a direct focus on European engagements at these levels of governance. Inter-disciplinarity and practical application of conceptual knowledge are hallmarks of Mundus MAPP.

Four leading European universities joined forces to deliver Mundus MAPP: Central European University in Budapest (Hungary), Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals (Spain), the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University in the Hague (Netherlands), and the University of York (UK). Building on Mundus MAPP's successful track record, the integrated curriculum provides a uniform core of policy studies as well as modules specific to particular mobility tracks, drawn predominantly from the fields of International Relations, European Studies and Development Studies. The four mobility tracks allow students to specialise in Political Economy and Development, Governance and Development, and European and Global Public Policy, respectively. Each mobility track includes a field trip to a relevant public sector organisation and an internship.

Admissions requirements

Mundus MAPP is open to both European and overseas (third country national) students. Erasmus Mundus scholarships are provided for the best eligible applicants by the European Commission.

Minimum requirements are:

Bachelors degree (completed at least three years of undergraduate study - normally at least Second Class);

Mundus MAPP does not require a language certificate from applicants from the following countries, provided that they have received a Bachelor's or Master'sdegree taught exclusively in English:

30 scholarships of AUD$10,000 each, available as a one-off award (total value AUD$10,000) for any Postgraduate Coursework program offered at the University of Sydney.

No living allowance is payable.

Criteria for Eligibility

Applicants must have completed the equivalent of an Australian Bachelor degree qualification with a minimum high distinction average as based on the Australian grading system. Students who have already commenced postgraduate studies, or students transferring from other postgraduate programs are not eligible.

Application Procedure

No separate application for a scholarship is necessary. An Application for Admission to the University of Sydney in 2012 will constitute an application for a scholarship. All applications meeting the selection and eligibility criteria will be automatically considered.

The deadline for receipt of applications and complete supporting documentation (academic and English language proficiency results) is 31 October 2011 for Semester 1, 2012, and 30 April 2012 (for Semester 2, 2012). Applications received after these deadlines will not be considered.

Selection Criteria
Selection will be based strictly on academic merit as per the University’s admission requirements. Selection will be based on actual results (academic and English language proficiency). Predicted/forecast results will not be considered.

Only applicants with firm, unconditional offers of admission will be considered.

Selection will be made by the University’s Scholarship Selection Committee, whose decision will be final. No appeals will be entertained.

Successful candidates will be informed in December 2011 (Semester 1, 2012) and June 2012 (Semester 2. 2012). Successful candidates applying through UAC will be informed in January 2012.

Conditions
Undergraduate scholarship recipients will need to maintain satisfactory academic progress, which, for the purposes of retaining the scholarship, is defined as maintaining a credit average (at least 65%) or more each year. Failure to do so may result in the scholarship being terminated.

Successful candidates:

must not be in receipt of any other tuition scholarship;

must commence study in 2012 – commencement may not be deferred;

will be required to pay for their own airfares to Sydney, living expenses, study materials, text books, any ancillary fees (if applicable) and Overseas Student Health Cover each year;

are also responsible for paying the balance of the tuition fees each year;

are required to enrol as full-time international students and must maintain their international student status on a full-time basis throughout their enrolment at the University of Sydney; and
may not be entitled to a ‘Leave of Absence’ during the duration of the scholarship, unless it is due to extenuating circumstances.

The Fellow must submit any outside work, volunteer or otherwise, that they may want to conduct whilst on a Foundation Fellowship, to the Foundation for approval.

We require attendance at the bi-annual Fellow gatherings and open accurate communication on all projects, movements and decisions.

The fellowship must be taken up between 2 and 4 months after awarded.

How are the Fellows selected

Fellowship applications are reviewed by the Shuttleworth Foundation management team and advisors. Shortlisted candidates are invited for interviews. The Foundation reserves the right not to award a fellowship if the submission does not meet the requirements.

AstroMundus is an international Master Course in Astronomy and Astrophysics that is funded by the European Commission within the Erasmus Mundus programme, 2nd Edition, Action 1. The Master course is open to students of all nationalities and is jointly offered by a consortium of 5 Universities in 4 different countries:

–the Institute of Astro- and Particle Physics, University of Innsbruck (Austria),
–the Department of Astronomy, University of Padova (Italy),
–the Astrophysics section of the Department of Physics, University of Rome ”Tor Vergata” (Italy),

Eligibility

Scholarship
A limited number of scholarships will be funded by the Erasmus Mundus 2009 – 2013 cooperation and mobility programme, under Action 1.

Applicants that wish to apply also for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship will have to state so in the application form. No additional application is required. Students that already received in the past an “Erasmus Mundus” scholarship are not eligible for a new one. Also, a student can apply for a maximum of 3 different Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses starting in the same academic year. Students that apply for more than 3 EM Courses will be excluded from the selection for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

There are two categories of scholarships:

Category A: They are intended as full scholarships and are reserved to Third Country students. Category A scholarships cover the registration fees (including the insurance), include a contribution to travel, installation and any other type of costs of 8000 €, and a monthly allowance of 1000 €/month for the whole duration of the Masters Course (24 months).

Not more than 2 students with the same nationality can be selected for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

For the scholarship programme 1 of KAAD you can apply if you:

*come from a developing or emerging country in Africa, Asia, the Middle East or Latin America
have a university degree and professional experience from your home country

*want to acquire a master's degree or a PhD at a German university or do a post-doctoral research project (2-6 months for established university lecturers) at a German university
are a Catholic Christian (or general belong to a Christian denomination). Candidates from other religions can apply if they are proposed by Catholic partners and can prove their commitment to interreligious dialogue

*possess German language skills before starting the studies (KAAD can provide a language course of max. 6 months in Germany).

Four doctoral student positions

At the Department of Law from 1 September 2011.

An employed doctoral student shall, foremost, be devoted to his or her own postgraduate research. Other duties at the faculty which relate to teaching and administrative work may be included within the scope of the employment (to a maximum of 20%).

A requirement for employment as doctoral student is that the applicant must be admitted to postgraduate studies. To this extent, the applicant’s ability to successfully complete the doctoral studies will be decisive. The regulations governing the employment of doctoral students may be found in Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Local guidelines are established for setting the salary.

A person may be employed as a doctoral student for a maximum of eight years, but no longer than the equivalent of four years of full-time postgraduate research study.

The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship: Europe, the Middle East and Africa

Anita Borg believed that technology affects all aspects of our economic, political, social and personal lives. A technology rebel with a cause, in her life she fought tirelessly to ensure that technology’s impact would be a positive one. It was this vision that inspired Anita in 1997 to found the Institute for Women and Technology. Today this organization continues on her legacy and bears her name, The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology (www.anitaborg.org).

The Scholarship

Dr. Anita Borg devoted her adult life to revolutionising the way we think about technology and dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields. Her combination of technical expertise and fearless vision continues to inspire and motivate countless women to become active participants and leaders in creating technology.

As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to furthering Anita’s vision, we are pleased to announce The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship: Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Through the scholarship, we aim to encourage women to excel in computing and technology, and become active role models and leaders.

Multiple scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic performance, leadership experience and demonstrated passion for computer science. A group of female Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD student finalists will be chosen from the applicant pool. The scholarship recipients will each receive a €7,000 (or equivalent) scholarship.

In June 2011, all scholarship recipients and finalists will be invited to visit Google’s Engineering Centre in Zurich for a networking retreat. It will include workshops with a series of speakers, panels, breakout sessions and social activities, and will provide an opportunity for all finalists to meet and share their experiences.

Eligibility requirements

Candidates must:

Be a female student enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programme (or equivalent) in 2011/2012.

Be enrolled at a University in Europe, the Middle East, or Africa. Citizens, permanent residents, and international students are eligible to apply.

Be studying Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Informatics, or a closely related technical field.

Maintain an excellent academic record (e.g. a First Class Honours degree).

Describe a significant technical project you have worked on. If you have worked on a major independent research project (such as research for a Master’s or PhD programme), please describe that work here. Give one or two examples of your leadership abilities. Explain how you were influential and what you were trying to achieve. These need not be demonstrated through formal or traditional leadership roles. Feel free to think broadly and examine the many ways you impact members of your technical community.

Suppose someone gave you the funding and resources for a 3- to 12-month project to investigate a technical topic of your choice. Write a short version of a proposal, including a description of the project, your planned methodology, and your expected results. Please pick something other than the project you described for the first question.

The Newton International Fellowships 2011

A new round of Newton International Fellowships – an initiative to fund research collaborations and improve links between UK and overseas researchers – has now opened.

The Newton International Fellowships are funded by the British Academy and the Royal Society and aim to attract the most promising early-career post-doctoral researchers from overseas in the fields of the humanities, the natural, physical and social sciences. The Fellowships enable researchers to work for two years at a UK research institution with the aim of fostering long-term international collaborations.

Newton Fellows will receive an allowance of £24,000 to cover subsistence and up to £8,000 to cover research expenses in each year of the Fellowship. A one-off relocation allowance of up to £2,000 is also available.

In addition, Newton Fellows may be eligible for follow-up funding of up to £6,000 per annum for up to 10 years following completion of the Fellowship to support activities which will help build long term links with the UK.

The scheme is open to post-doctoral (and equivalent) early-career researchers working outside the UK who do not hold UK citizenship.

The Institute of International Education (IIE) is now accepting applications for the Dissertation Fellowship in Population, Reproductive Health, and Economic Development. Sponsored by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the fellowship awards up to $20,000 per year for work and research on the dissertation. In addition, Fellows will become part of a network of researchers and participate in professional development opportunities. Applicants should be currently enrolled in Ph.D. programs in either sub-Saharan Africa, the United States or Canada, and should have completed their coursework by the start of the fellowship. Students in economics, economic demography, geography, and epidemiology are especially encouraged to apply.

These fellowships will support dissertation research on topics that examine how population dynamics and family planning and reproductive health influence economic development, including economic growth, poverty reduction, and equity. Dissertations that address population and development issues pertinent to the African continent are especially encouraged. The research must include a strong quantitative component, with an emphasis on rigorous data analysis. We encourage the development or use of new statistical methods. Finally, the research must have a strong policy-relevant component, demonstrating an interest in communicating research results with program managers, planners, and policymakers.

The objective of The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation/IIE Dissertation Fellowship is to produce sound evidence on the role of population and reproductive health in economic development that could be incorporated into national and international economic planning and decision making.

International Summer School in Forced Migration:11 - 29 July 2011

The Refugee Studies Centre’s International Summer School fosters dialogue between academics, practitioners and policymakers working to improve the situation of refugees and other forced migrants. It provides the time and space for them to reflect on their experiences and to think critically about some of the aims and assumptions underlying their work.

Who is the summer school for?

Policy makers and practitioners involved with humanitarian assistance and policy making for forced migrants. Participants typically include host government officials, intergovernmental and non-governmental agency personnel engaged in planning, administering and co-ordinating assistance.

Why participate?
The summer school offers an intensive, interdisciplinary and participative approach to the study of forced migration. It aims to enable people working with refugees and other forced migrants to reflect critically on the forces and institutions that dominate the world of the displaced.

Now in its 22nd year, the three-week course combines the very best of Oxford University’s academic excellence with a stimulating and participatory method of critical learning.

The details

When?
Annually. In 2011 the dates are 11–29 July.

Where?
At the University of Oxford. In 2011 the summer school will be held at Wadham College and the Oxford Department of International Development.

How much?
The fee for 2011 is £3,125. Pay by 31 March to qualify for a reduced fee of £2,950.
What is included?
This covers 19 nights’ bed-and-breakfast accommodation and all weekday lunches; all tuition; all course materials, including reading materials; and a range of social activities.Evening and weekend meals are not included in the course fees.

Requirements
Applicants should have:

experience in working with, or on issues related to, refugees or other forced migrants
a first degree
proficiency in the English language. As a guide, foreign-language English speakers should be able to obtain a score of 7.00 in ELTS/IELTS or 570 in TOEFL.
Accommodation
Accommodation is of general student standard. There are no facilities provided for partners or other family members. Participants arriving before or staying on after the summer school should make their own accommodation arrangements.

Subsistence
As well as fees and travel costs, participants should budget for subsistence and incidental expenses during the course. We suggest a minimum of £20-£25 per day. In addition, you might want to add a books/photocopying allowance.

Sponsorship
A number of bursaries are offered on a competitive basis. Conditions for their allocation are dependent on the bursary providers' criteria, and are usually linked to certain poorer countries or regions. Some past participants have been successful in obtaining sponsorship by dealing directly with funding sources that they have researched themselves. We strongly advise potential applicants to look for funding as widely as possible, as we always receive many more bursary applications than we are able to offer.

Use of the RSC’s library collection
The programme provides a course pack of reading materials. Many more documents are available in the University of Oxford’s Social Science Library, which houses the RSC collection.

Insurance
Participants are responsible for their own insurance. Participants from outside the European Union should consider medical insurance if their country does not have a reciprocal agreement with the UK for free medical treatment.

Applying for Admission as an International Student

Costs and Financial Aid for International Students

Berea College is the only school in the United States that provides 100% funding to 100% of enrolled international students for the first year of enrollment. This combination of financial aid and scholarships offsets the costs of tuition, room, board, and fees.

In subsequent years, international students are expected to save $1,000 (US) per year to contribute toward their expenses. The College does provide summer jobs to international students so that they may meet this obligation.

Accepted international students are expected to pay a $50 (US) entrance fee and a $2,200 (US) deposit to confirm their enrollment.This deposit can be used by international students for certain expenses during their four years of enrollment. For students who are unable to pay all or a portion of the deposit, additional financial aid is available.

All international students are provided with a paid, on-campus job through the College’s Work Program throughout the academic year. Students may use their wages (about $1,200 (US) the first year) to cover personal expenses.

The Global Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh requests applications for the H. J. Heinz Company Foundation Fellowship Program. The program begins August 1, 2011 and ends July 31, 2012. The Heinz Fellowship was established in 1982 by an endowment from the H. J. Heinz Company Foundation to the University of Pittsburgh’s University Center for International Studies. The Fellowship provides for one year of practical, professional, and non-degree educational experiences through the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. For this round, Heinz Fellowships will be granted to two individuals from developing countries who demonstrate potential as future leaders in the government, non-profit, or private sectors. The goal is to improve, early in a career, the Fellows’ capacity to contribute to the development of their country and to enhance their understanding of the United States. This is accomplished through a year of auditing selected courses and participating in practical professional activities while based in Pittsburgh. Courses taken as part of the Heinz Fellowship do not earn credit towards an academic degree.

Eligibility

The competition for a Heinz Fellowship is open to men and women from developing countries whose record of accomplishment early in their career indicates strong potential for leadership and achievement in business, government, public services, or other relevant professions.
1. Applicants must have completed a university degree.
2. Applicants must be proficient in speaking, reading and writing English.
3. Preference will be given to those applicants at the early or mid-stages of their career.
4. The fellowship is intended for individuals in the practitioner/policy domains. It is not awarded for basic academic research, academic sabbaticals, nor for medical research.
5. Two candidates will be chosen each year. One fellowship will be awarded to a candidate from either China, India, or Indonesia who specializes in public health and the other applicant should be working in one of the following:

a. Governance: Management and administration of public and nonprofit agencies; growth and sustainable development of urban metropolitan regions throughout the world; economic and social development of newly independent and developing states; emerging dynamics that are shaping today's international political economy; threats to and issues in international security

Program at the University

Within the first month of arrival, the fellow will develop and submit a plan of work which identifies the ways and means of sharpening existing professional expertise during the fellowship residency. This plan will be followed up by a progress report at the end of the first semester, and a final report at the end of the fellowship. Typically, fellows audit courses within the University and participate in internships in Pittsburgh or elsewhere in the United States. The University of Pittsburgh, one of the leading research universities in the United States, encompasses 14 professional schools, 28 departments in the arts, social and natural sciences, 3,700 faculty members, 35,000 students, and library holdings of over 3.5 million volumes. The University is located in an urban center of cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity. Fellows will be able to draw on these resources and will be aided by an academic mentor.

During the residency, the fellow is expected to give at least one presentation on a subject related to his or her professional background to members of the University. In addition, the fellow is strongly encouraged to participate in community outreach activities in Pittsburgh, for example, by lecturing about his or her home country to an audience of high school students or interested adults.

Certificate of Completion
A final report is required. Fellows will receive a Program Certificate from UCIS. This is a non-degree program. Courses are audited on an informal basis and do not earn credit towards an academic degree.

Financial Information
Fellows will receive a living stipend of $18,000 (paid out in monthly installments), health insurance, round-trip transportation to and from Pittsburgh, and a $2,000 program and professional activities fund. Please note that if the fellow comes from a country which does not have a tax treaty with the U.S., the fellow must pay U.S. taxes amounting to 14% of the stipend.

Dependents

No transportation, living or insurance funds are provided for dependents. The fellowship does not include allowances or special services for dependents whether or not they accompany the fellow. Applicants will be required, as a condition of the grant, to submit a statement of their ability to finance the transportation and maintenance expenses for dependents. Please note that U.S. government visa restrictions make employment opportunities for dependents rare.

Early Terminations
Acceptance of a grant by a candidate constitutes an agreement between the grantee and the University. It is expected that, barring unforeseen emergencies, grantees will remain for the full tenure of the award. A grantee who leaves the U.S. or terminates the grant at a date earlier than that specified in the grant authorization, without consent of the University, will be required to reimburse the University for any expenditures made on his or her behalf.
